Corylus avellana – Hazel

In stock

Corylus avellana is a beautiful native, multi-stem tree often going unnoticed in the landscape. Traditionally they are grown as hedges and respond very well to being layed. This is a process of thickening hedges in a traditional way through regular pruning.
We prune these by lifting the canopy high enough to reveal the strong multiple stems underneath, this creates a stunning multi-stem canopy tree. This is a deciduous tree with rounded leaves which turn yellow during the autumn. The yellow male catkins in early spring are a stunning display when most plants are still dormant. The tree gets covered with hazelnuts at the end of summer, which are delicious when roasted. You just need to get to them before the squirrels!
Corylus avellana is a great native tree which can be used as a focal point, or as part of a hedge or border.  Responding very well to pruning means they can be kept at any size so they can be kept in smaller gardens.
